Bluray Tuesday!

December 01, 2015

Bluray Tuesday is back and it's the first one of December. Not much is being released this week but that's good since Black Friday shopping burned a hole in my wallet. AMC's The Walking Dead aired its mid-season finale last night and won't return till February. If you tend to get The Walking Dead withdrawals like me, you'll be glad to hear that Fear The Walking Dead is out on Bluray today. I started this spin-off but I am looking forward to watching from the beginning and binging until the end. Elijah Wood's new film Cooties finally arrives on Bluray this week, as well as Goodnight Mommy, both of which I will be picking up. I've been wanting to see both of these for a long time. Last but not least, if you are a fan of the Mondo Steelbook series the latest will be released today only on Target.com. These titles are Reservoir Dogs and Highlander, both with awesome cover art. So what will you be buying, renting or just skipping this week? Let us know in the comments and check out our Instagram page Here. We love to talk about horror and what new films are coming out. If you have recommendations on what we should review let us know. We also have some giveaways going on as well, so check us out. Until next week.

There's a sign of the apocalypse in Los Angeles, where reports of a strange flu and the disappearance of people underscore this gritty drama, a prequel to AMC's uber-popular "Walking Dead." The story of the mysterious outbreak and its ramifications are told through the lens of high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa. A widowed mother, Madison, is raising two children single-handedly, but has recently found love with Travis, who maintains a relationship with his ex-wife and resentful son while trying to become a father to Madison's children. The challenge of blending their families is exacerbated by unforeseen chaos, and a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold. The Clarks and Manawas must reinvent themselves, or embrace their darker histories.

All Things Must Pass, The Rise and Fall of Tower Records

"No Music, No Life"

Over the weekend, we took a field trip to watch All Things Must Pass, a documentary about the rise and fall of Tower Records. It is a fantastic, well made documentary about the phenomenon that became an iconic music store, and a very strong directorial debut by Colin Hanks. It spoke to something in me on a different level than just interest in the story. It felt incredibly nostalgic in a way that I don't think future generations will be able to understand.
I was born in the 80's, I did not grow up in them. And what's more, I was not born in this country, and didn't actually make the move until the early 90's. Even then I had a slightly different upbringing until my family adjusted to their new cultural surroundings. There are a lot of things I missed when they were new and only learned about much later. But one thing I will always remember is getting my first bit of freedom as a young adult and using it to make regular trips to Haight Street to buy CDs at Amoeba. Music was the first thing I collected and there was an endless sea of genres and releases, always something to add to the collection. Although I could not frequent Tower as often as I'd liked, it was too far from me, I could easily relate to the the people who made Tower Records what it was.

All Things Must Pass is as much about a subsulture and a breed of person as it is about a record store chain. There is also a very universal theme of losing your once second home due to "the times" shifting away from the simplicity of the past. One of the most difficult things for me to process about the film was the feeling that this breed is being squashed and pushed out to make room for the future when people just seemed happier with the past.

Since the filming of All Things Must Pass, there has been a resurgence of vinyl production and collection, so things may be on their way to something new again, but we'll just have to wait and see.
One thing's for sure, you should go see this film when you get the chance! And if you're near the bay area, you're in luck because the Roxie Theatre will be showing it all week. Tonight would be a great night to make it though, because it will be the only night to feature Stan Goman, former COO of the company, in person after the screening. Shows will be at 7pm until Thursday and you can get tickets early at the Roxie's site

Hope you guys can make it!

The Overlook Theatre Reviews: Thanksgiving horror, Kristy

of 6 viewers "Liked" "Kristy" (USA, 2014)
Here's what the citizens of the Overlook Theatre had to say:

Book Wyrm - *Spoiler* - "This movie was good in that I felt sympathetic for the main character, the setting was great, and even the soundtrack was cool. It really reminded me of a type of It Follows but real life-esque. It also depressed me in that I want to go to an actual cool college instead of my lame community. Aside from that I liked seeing the vampire from Twilight burn up. All it was missing was a good Thanksgiving one-liner." - 5 Stars

The Berkeley Blazer - "This film has some really interesting moments and ideas, and the strongest thing it has going for it is how they achieved a sense of isolated malevolence. Sometimes I found myself so bored out of my skull I started conducting an imaginary baton to the score, but many times I often found myself riveted to the protagonists plight, especially her early scenes on campus alone. If you're not a fan of slashers/home invasion films, this film will not convert you, but if you are this is a holiday romp that is worth one viewing." - 3 Stars

Lord Battle -"Take Ti West's House of the Devil, mix it with Alexander Aja's P2, then change the holiday to Thanksgiving, and presto! You have Kristy, a film that we've seen before but with just enough tweaks to stay interesting and a holiday backdrop that really works. Kristy will definitely be on rotation for future Thanksgivings but I just don't see this film screening otherwise." - 3.5 Stars

Huntress - "Kristy mastered the art of creating unbearable tension and inserting jump scares tactically to work as a slight relief. It went in a direction I hadn't thought about but that I really enjoyed. And I appreciated that there were only a couple of moments where the main character had a MacGyver-esque genius, instead of being a badass the whole time. I also loved how little Thanksgiving was mentioned." - 4.5 Stars

Math Mage - "My first thought: "What if it's Christy with a "Ch" instead of a "K"? Is it still okay to kill them". A thrilling home-invasion film with many tense moments and exciting kills." - 4 Stars

Ice Giant - "While Kristy doesn't bring anything new to the table, it does established stuff very well." - 4.5 Stars

The Overlook Theatre Final Rating*
(Below is for after you've seen the film)

Even the most stubborn of horror fans couldn't deny that nothing beats watching a holiday horror film in its appropriate season, especially with a bunch of people on the actual holiday. The explosion of slashers in the 80's has left us pretty much covered for even the most insignificant of holidays (i.e. Memorial Day Massacre, Uncle Sam). Slashers use holidays as a backdrop to up the emotional ante of the killer's lore and as an easy marker for annual curses. The degree of how effective and or scary this makes the film drastically varies. A masked man stalking a young girl on Halloween is terrifying but also incredibly believable, a turkey puppet shouting obscenities on Thanksgiving is not. Thankfully there is Kristy.
Thanksgiving as a modern holiday is thought of as two days off from work/school, where family will visit or be visited and all will eat their fill. Of course, this isn't true for everyone and in Kristy, it especially isn't for Justine, whose lack of holiday celebration actually strengthens the film 10 fold. Kristy is a film about Justine, who is the lone resident staying on campus over Thanksgiving break. There is no grand meal, family, or even any decorations in Kristy, which you become even more aware of during the montage of Justine walking the abandoned halls of her school. The visual storytelling is so strong during these parts that you can't help but sympathize with the strong juxtaposition of our national holiday.

On a side note, Kristy originally aired on the Lifetime channel during an October lineup. And with a little bit of internet research it appears Kristy was supposed to air as a critical look at the dangers of social media and how people are wrongfully targeted by internet trolls... Well maybe the last part is just me rolling my eyes at the poor girl targeted for driving a BMW but either way, Kristy will stand strong as a Thanksgiving film that will make you give serious thanks for not being alone for the holiday.

Night Feeder Attacks the Roxie!

Nights like these really make me appreciate living near such a diverse and eventful city!

The Roxie Theatre has been one of the Overlook's favorites for a long time, but lately they have been going all out for their horror events. This past Saturday, they had a one night only screening of Night Feeder, a late 80's horror movie that was filmed in San Francisco, had very promising art, and a monster. But somehow, it got lost in the home video era. Even now, it only has 6 votes on IMDB

The night started with an introduction by the creative manager at the new San Francisco branch of the Alamo Drafthouse, Mike Keegan. He talked about the video rental age, where filmmakers would "sell the sizzle, not the steak." That meant they would put all their effort into mind blowing posters that made a bunch of promises about the movie they were advertising; that you were in for nudity, blood, monsters, and explosions. But the movie would inevitably fall short and it wouldn't even matter because the rental place already had your money. And there was no way, other than word of mouth maybe, to let people know which movies were not worth their time. But this was not the case with Night Feeder!

Without saying too much, Night Feeder was a very 80's feeling movie about a serial killer targeting people in the same neighborhood. It worked a couple of over the top characters, illicit drug use, and mysterious murders into an early "pretty girl mystery" without the ghosts. I'm very glad that the first thing I did when I walked into the theatre was buy a copy of it immediately. Especially since they sold out.

Mondo teamed up with Bleeding Skull! to bring this movie to into our collections, and you can still get your own copy at Bleedingskull.com. It comes with a booklet containing an interview with the filmmakers, about the movie and the time it was made in. It's very worth the $15!

After the screening, James and Jody Gillerman, producer and coproducer, answered questions from the audience and Mike, but it turned into a pretty big reunion for the film. Writers, actors, offspring of people involved, and even the man responsible for the seriously impressive special effects were there and were more than happy to stick around and talk to anyone who engaged them.

Thanks to the Roxie for hosting such an awesome night, and for the San Francisco Drafthouse for Tweeting the hell out of the event!

Overlooked Crowd Funding: Bring Back MST3K

The campaign to bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000 is probably the most expensive one I've seen yet, but in the first week that it's been active, it has already reached beyond its minimum goal! There was no doubt in my mind that this campaign would reach the 2 million it needed to get the ball rolling on production, exceed it even. In this case, exceeding the minimum is really how the fans will get the most out of this project. I wasn't clear on this at first, but 2 million will cover three full length episodes, but if we want to see a full 12 episode season, the campaign will need to raise more than double the minimum. Which sounds like lot!
Luckily, the man behind the dream, Joel Hodgson, could not be more transparent with how the money is to be spent. On the campaign page he breaks everything down into reasonable terms, and tells you exactly how much of the take is to be delegated to each episode. He also posted a quick break down while doing an AMA around the time the campaign launched.
When all the one time fees are paid off, each episode would get 12% of the total, which comes to about 250K. That's a bit more than episodes cost to make in the 90's, but a reasonable bit. After all, everything costs more than it did in the 90's. And keep in mind that each episode gets cheaper to make, since many of the costs will already have been covered.

I mentioned earlier that Joel fielded questions during an AMA interview about a week ago, and you can find the whole thing here. I read through and picked a couple of the highlights:

Q: I'm curious... are you planning on featuring modern movies on the new version of the show, or are you going to focus on 50s-90s films, like how it was originally? Kind of hoping for the latter.

A: I think we're gonna go after everything. But I have to tell you, I think movies from the 70's and 80's are part of what makes MST3K, MST3K. Those movies will be what feels familiar to people. There's just so many of them! We'll slowly work our way upstream. There are definitely some movies from after 1999 that are ripe for riffing. Thanks for your support and suggestions. There's a lot of moving pieces to this puzzle, but I'm excited to see how it turns out too!

Q: If you were trapped on a desert island (or space station of love) alone and could only take one movie, what movie would it actually be?

A: If I could only take one movie, I guess it would be the Beatles' "Hard Day's Night." I'm just astonished at how talented the Beatles were, not only musically but comedically. For being in their early twenties, those guys were incredible. I mean, who does that?

Q: You guys riffed a lot of shorts in addition to the movies. Are you guys going to focus more on films, or keep the mix that you had? Also, any plans to riff The Room? "I did not hit her! I did not- oh, hi Mark!"

A: We'd love to do more shorts. They're such a key part of MST3K. I'm not sure whether they'll be part of this new season, but I'd love to include more of them in the future.
We love The Room, but I think MST3K does best when we steer away from movies that are famous for being bad. That's why we never did "Plan 9 From Outer Space" during our original run.
To me, watching Mystery Science Theater is kind of like going to a haunted house on the edge of town with your funny friends. It works best if you don't know what's in there.

Q: Where will these episodes be placed? Is there going to be a dedicated MST3K site to watch them, are you going to bring this to a network to air, or maybe an online platform like Netflix?

A: That's a really important question. The answer is that we don't know for sure yet. Part of the plan is to see how many people get excited about the Kickstarter campaign and want MST3K back, so that we can talk with broadcast networks and digital platforms about bringing MST3K back for another thirty years. There, I said it. Another 30 years.
I don't know who it will be, but we've already gotten some excited phone calls today from people in Hollywood who are watching what's happening. So it's working! Keep Circulating the URL, and maybe the next season of MST3K will be beamed straight into your eyes!
One other thing. It's really important to me that backers who help us make a new season get to ENJOY that season without spending more money, so all of the rewards above $100 include HD downloads of all of the new episodes with no DRM or copy protection. I just think that's important. It's the right thing to do. It's proper.

Q: I'm curious about how much of the reboot is in terms of the background story/host segment portions. I mean, will the old show and characters be referenced or alluded to? Or is this a hard reboot where everything that happened prior doesn't exist?

A: Everything that happened in the old MST3K definitely happened. The show will continue in that same timeline. This isn't St. Elsewhere, and it's not the new Temperatures Rising starring Paul Lynde. For example, the new Mad will be the offspring of Dr. Clayton Forrester, and the grandchild of Pearl Forrester, and therefore heir to the MST3K Experiment. Hope that puts you at ease.

One of the concerns that came up during the interview has actually been addressed already, and that was the mystery surrounding the host and mads. As the minimum goal got closer and closer, it was announced that Jonah Ray will be the new host of MST3K.

The two met three years ago, while recording an episode of the Nerdist podcast, and then talked comedy outside of the studio, hitting it off immediately. And Jonah is also a fan of MST3K, so rest assured that he will be in favor of preserving its traditions and integrity. But even if you aren't crazy about this choice, keep in mind that he is not meant to be the host for as long as the show will run; hosts were always intended to be recast every so often, but the show was cancelled before that became obvious.

Now, let's take a gander at the potential rewards that this campaign has to offer. All donations grant you access to exclusive updates and also come with a token of appreciation in the form of a 2" membership card. So, even if you can only give 10 bucks, you won't be left empty handed.

Affordable:
  • $25 is all it will take to get access to the live streaming of the first episode, complete with movie sign sounds. Great for those who have waited long enough!
  • $35 - just another $10 and you can just download the whole episode and watch it whenever you want, which is a better choice for those who battle with their internet connections.
Under $100:
  • $75 - this is probably more than you'd pay for a regular coffee mug, but this is an MST3K coffee mug, and it will be exclusive to the Kickstarter campaign. It also comes with collectible and easily frame-able postcards featuring movie poster art work.
  • $100 - at this level, you will be able to download all of the new episodes of MST3K, be it three, five, or twelve. They'll all be yours.
Breaking the Piggy Bank:
  • $200 - Most collectors I know prefer to have a physical copy, rather than a digital download of the things they like, and MST3K has those people in mind with this perk. At this level, you can get the official box set, which you will only be able to get through this campaign. It will include exclusive backer content and will be available on bluray or DVD. It sounds like a lot, but you will also get all the previous perks which definitely makes it worth the money.
  • $250 - VHS is back! And even though most people have long since gotten rid of their VCRs, tapes are still fun to display. That's partially why this is such a cool perk, you get a collectible VHS of the pilot episode but it also comes with an MST3K patch! This also comes with many of the previous perks to sweeten the deal.

There are several options for attending premieres in different cities, but I won't get into those. And keep in mind that every perk comes with a bundle of the previous perks, which is why it seems a bit pricey. And Kickstarter does not actually charge you until the end of the campaign, so if you need a little more time to save some money, you have just under three weeks.
And as with all campaigns, this one has a perk that deserves some special attention...
Honorable Mention goes to the $10,000 perk, which was limited to two, but still has one available. It comes with both Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo robots in the flesh! And again, that comes with a lot more that just those two.

Currently, there are 18 days left in this campaign, and a lot of other perks that I didn't list. You can check out the campaign and read the updates in more detail by clicking here. And you can find the campaign video below.

A Musical Adventure at the Phoenix Theatre: "The Toxic Avenger Musical"

What's a monster kid to do when stuck out in Arizona on business? Easy!!! Seek out other friendly and talented monster kids! Every town has its nerds and when you get amazing theatre nerds and combine them with horror nerd concepts like Lloyd Kaufman's 1984 cult classic The Toxic Avenger, beautiful things can happen. My wife Ruby caught wind that this production was taking place 10 minutes away from our hotel so of course Lord Battle and I ran to the nearest computer and bought whatever tickets we could find for the performance that night.

The Phoenix Theatre web site had this to say -"Our Unlikely hero, Toxie, a mutant freak with superhero strength and a heart bigger than Newark, will battle for the cleanup of the Turnpike. Add in a charming love story, a dash of corruption and stiletto-wearing back up singers and you will have an uproarious, R-rated rock musical that will have you falling in 'Hot Toxic Love.' For mature audiences only."

I can honestly say that the Phoenix Theatre went all out with this production. With an insanely small cast of 5 and an incredible set design, Toxic Avenger never looked or sounded better. The music was funny, well sung, amazingly un P.C., and backed by a shredding band who took every chance to show off their metal skills. I was blown away by the entire cast and their ability to change so quickly from one character to the next in seconds, sometimes even changing into little old white ladies, even though they are full grown black male actors. The practical stage effects were fun and well designed with limbs being torn off and spines being removed. The most shocking part was that the sold out crowd that night, who mostly consisted of older theatre goers, clapped to the music and laughed along with everyone else, proving yet again there's a little monster kid in all of us. If you live in the Phoenix, Arizona area you should take every chance you can to support this theatre and its amazing productions. If I had more time I would have seen it again!
