Fantastical Weekend Screenings in the City

Happy Friday everyone! 

We're at the tail end of a rough week, one full of some very unexpected and heart-wrenching losses. The touching memorial posts seem never ending. But there are also those that remind us that we should not mourn, but rather celebrate the lives and minds we were lucky enough to be inspired and soothed by. And in that vein, theatres all over the city and outside of it are screening Labyrinth this weekend. The San Francisco Alamo Drafthouse is even suspending their no-talking rule for a quote and sing along screening of the legendary film. But that's just one of the noteworthy events that will be going on this weekend.

Roxie Theatre

Midnites for Maniacs is temporarily relocated this month and will be held at the Roxie Theatre. Playing are two movies I haven't watched in years, so I'm looking forward to rewatching them with a different outlook on things. And I can't wait to see what Jesse Hawthorne has to say about these two. Both films will be screened in 35mm.

Lost in Translation

Starts at 7pm

"A lonely, aging movie star named Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and a conflicted newlywed, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), meet in Tokyo. Bob is there to film a Japanese whiskey commercial; Charlotte is accompanying her celebrity-photographer husband. Strangers in a foreign land, the two find escape, distraction and understanding amidst the bright Tokyo lights after a chance meeting in the quiet lull of the hotel bar. They form a bond that is as unlikely as it is heartfelt and meaningful. 2003. 104 min. 35mm."

The Virgin Suicides

Alamo Drafthouse 

I would suggest ordering these tickets early if you plan to attend, seeing as so many screenings are already sold out at other theatres. David Bowie was a seriously difficult loss to process, no matter how much of a fan you were. He is and always will be an icon in so many realms.

Labyrinth

Starts at 3pm

"Teenage Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) journeys through a maze to recover her baby brother (Toby Froud) from a goblin king (David Bowie)."  (...As if you guys needed that.)

Clay Theatre

Also this week is the Clay Theatre's Midnight Madness screening. It's kind of funny, the first time I saw Labyrinth, it was at a double feature with The Dark Crystal. And now, all these years later, the two are back to back once again. 

The Dark Crystal

Screening Friday the 15th and Saturday the 16th at midnight

"Jen (Stephen Garlick), raised by the noble race called the Mystics, has been told that he is the last survivor of his own race, the Gelflings. He sets out to try to find a shard of the dark crystal, a powerful gem that once provided balance to the universe. After the crystal was broken, the evil Skeksis used sinister means to gain control. Jen believes that he can repair the dark crystal and bring peace back to the world, if he can only find the remaining shard."
