Screening in the Bay (Friday to Sunday): Arrival, Shut In, Diary of a Lost Girl


Happy Veteran's Day guys! We're at the beginning of the first weekend after the official end of the Halloween season, and I think it really shows. There are some new movies out today, and a couple of cool screenings with special guests, but there is much less going on in general. So it you find yourself looking for something to do tis Sunday, stop by the DNA Lounge for the first ever San Francisco Punk Metal Flea Market, presented by Savage People. (Get to know them here.) But before we get ahead of ourselves, let's check out what's playing.

Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leads an elite team of investigators when humongous spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.

Mary (Naomi Watts) is a child psychologist who lives in isolation in rural New England after her husband dies in a horrific car accident. The tragedy also leaves her 18-year-old stepson Stephen (Charlie Heaton) in a bedridden, catatonic state, making him completely dependent on her. When one of Mary's young patients goes missing and is presumed dead, she becomes convinced that the boy's (Jacob Tremblay) ghost is now haunting both her and Stephen.

Leader Richie Gennaro (Ken Wahl) finds himself entangled with Despie Galasso (Toni Kalem), the daughter of a mobster, while the artistically inclined Joey (John Friedrich) falls hard for Nina (Karen Allen).

In Germany, chemist's daughter Thymian (Louise Brooks) is raped by her father's assistant. When she becomes pregnant and bears a child but refuses to marry her assaulter, her outraged father sends her to a brutal reformatory. Thymian soon escapes with a friend, Erika (Edith Meinhard), only to learn that her child has died. She then finds Erika working at a brothel and, with no other option, joins her. Gradually, Thymian works her way higher by marrying a count, but her past haunts her.

Dockworker Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) had been an up-and-coming boxer until powerful local mob boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) persuaded him to throw a fight. When a longshoreman is murdered before he can testify about Friendly's control of the Hoboken waterfront, Terry teams up with the dead man's sister Edie (Eva Marie Saint) and the streetwise priest Father Barry (Karl Malden) to testify himself, against the advice of Friendly's lawyer, Terry's older brother Charley (Rod Steiger).

But the increasingly petulant star's ego, arrogance and womanizing threaten his rise to the top.

Elaine (Samantha Robinson), a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, then picks up men and seduces them. When she at last meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved drives her to the brink of insanity and murder.
