Screenings in the Bay (Monday to Friday): The Handmaiden, Fifth Element, Belladonna of Sadness

As we get into the very last week of 2016, and our horror lineup remains pretty short, it look like we're getting anther chance to check out a couple of the films we might have missed from earlier in the year. The Handmaiden has been getting a fair amount of attention and, while it isn't exactly a horror movie, it still looks and sounds with while. I admit, this is one I missed during its initial theatrical screenings, and the one I most regret missing. The Belladonna of Sadness is another one that back on the big screen this week. A couple of the Overlook creatures made it to the last screening that the Alamo Drafthouse was showing of this one, and every other time was sold out before we could get there. It's also horror adjacent but not one that you'd regret checking out.

From PARK Chan-wook, the celebrated director of OLDBOY, LADY VENGEANCE, THIRST and STOKER, comes a ravishing new crime drama inspired by the novel 'FINGERSMITH' by British author Sarah Waters. Having transposed the story to 1930s-era colonial Korea and Japan, Park presents a gripping and sensual tale of a young Japanese Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, but who is secretly involved in a conman's plot to defraud her of her large inheritance. Powered by remarkable performances from KIM Min-hee (RIGHT NOW, WRONG THEN) as Lady Hideko, HA Jung-woo (THE CHASER) as the conman who calls himself the Count and sensational debut actress KIM Tae-ri as the maid Sookee, THE HANDMAIDEN borrows the most dynamic elements of its source material and combines it with PARK Chan-wook's singular vision and energy to create an unforgettable viewing experience.

Lucy gets a job from video-store owner Max (Edward Herrmann), then begins dating him, while Sam hangs out with Edward and Alan Frog (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander), a pair of vampire-obsessed comic-shop clerks. Soon Michael falls in with some actual vampires after becoming enamored of one of their victims: Star (Jami Gertz), a gypsy-like vixen who is trying to hold on to her humanity even though vampire leader David (Kiefer Sutherland) wants to play Peter Pan to her Wendy. When Michael visits the cavernous hangout of David and his cronies and unwittingly drinks from a wine bottle full of vampiric blood, he becomes an unwilling member of the bloodsucker biker gang. Soon, it's up to Sam and the Frog brothers to destroy David and his ilk without killing Michael and Star.
